It’s Coming Home!

With the Euro 2020 tournament currently taking place, many of our team members have been re-igniting their passion for the sport! Sophie, our Health Referral Advisor, is here to share why she enjoys football, how you can get involved in our local area and the many benefits of team sport.

I have always loved football since a young age, watching and playing throughout my life. I love supporting and encouraging teams of all genders and am a supporter of Arsenal – one of the biggest clubs in England!

Football is not only the most popular sport to watch in England, but also the most popular team sport. In a report from The Football Association in 2015, it’s stated that 8.2 million adults participated in playing football that year!

In recent years, our country has seen a huge increase in women enjoying and participating in football. According to The Football Association’s participation tracker, 2.6 million women said they played football in June 2019, which was the highest amount ever recorded!

Next year, we will see the 2022 European Women’s Football Championship being held in England as well as a game changing broadcast TV deal – for the Women’s Super League to be shown for free on TV! This will greatly improve the quality of the league as well as help to grow the fanbase. I’m hugely encouraged by these events and this makes me very excited for the future of women’s football!

There are loads of benefits to playing team sports, including football! Here are a few:

  • Improve physical fitness
  • Improve mental health
  • Increase social confidence
  • Have fun whilst meeting new people
  • Get involved with some friendly competition!

I love how accessible football is for all abilities and there are many ways you can get involved:
